Aspectos biológicos del calamar Illex argentinus OceanDocs
Leta, H.R..

Militelli, M.I..
In the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic), particularly in the Bonaerense Coastal Zone there are two frontal zones, the waterfront area of the Rio de la Plata and the southern area of the province called El Rincón. The fauna of the Bonaerense Coastal Area has its own characteristics and in the case of fish is defined by dominant species, as is the whole of Sciaenidae family composed of seven species: white mouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), striped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa), king weakfish (Macrodon ancylodon), black drum (Pogonias cromis), Argentine croaker (Umbrina canosai), drum (Paralonchurus brasiliensis) and southern kingfish (Menticirrhus americanus). In the present work is discussed in a comparative way various aspects of the reproductive cycle...

Sabatini, M..
Fish recruitment seems to be influenced by environmental variability;the plankton would act as a link between both processes. While environmental variability can be explained in terms of physical forcing, recruitment variability is partly determined by the survival of early larvae. In this review, the available information on hydrography and plankton in relation to reproduction and feeding of hake (Merluccius hubbsi)and anchovy (Engraulis anchoita)in the Patagonian Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic spawning ground was summarized and integrated. The objective was to assess what is actually known about the environmental and planktonic features of the region that may have an effect on the recruitment of both species. In the Patagonian spawning ground, detection, in...

Machinandiarena, L.; Brown, D.R.; Ehrlich, M.D.; Pájaro, M.; Dorado, J.; Teso, V..
Distribution and abundance of eggs, larvae and prerecruit stages of Merluccius hubbsi were evaluated to examine spawning, nursery and settlement areas in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone during the 1999-2001 period. Larvae and prerecruit stages were more abundant at stations from 50 m to 100 m depth. The nursery area would extend from the 50 m isobath south of 37° S to the 200 m isobath northward where the shelf becomes narrower. In the whole sampling area small size prerecruits were caught; therefore, the whole zone should be considered as a potential settlement area.

Perrotta, R.G..
The polaca (Micromesistius australis)is a typical fish from the cold Malvinas current (temperatures between 3° and 10°C). The species is found in depths between 90 and 800 m and in latitudes from 37°40' to 50° S during winter and spring and from 42°S to 55°S during summer time, over the patagonian shelf and Burdwood Bank. One part of the stock reaches the southern region of the Scotia Sea, the western South Georgias and eastern South Shetland Islands. The dominant food species are Euphausia spp. The polaca is mainly a carcinophagous fish and may be found in a 3-4 trophic level, being one of the main food sources for primary and secondary ichthyophagous fishes.

Perier, M.R.; Di Giácomo, E.E..
The San Matias Gulf (Argentine Sea) fishery was historically developed and based on the catching of a target species: the common hake Merluccius hubbsi. There are also other marketable species such as the savorin Seriolella porosa. The presence of this species in the gulf is characterized by its abundance, population structure and biology. The material used was derived from three information sources: fishing survey cruises, landing samplings and record of the fishing activity. The results obtained allowed to delimit a spawning ground and a nursery area. The relative abundance of the resource showed seasonal variations with the highest values in August. The captured range size was 19-59 cm for females and 19-56 cm for males. The first sexual maturity was...

Acha, E.M..
The Brazilian menhaden, Brevoortia aurea, is the only species of genus Brevoortia in South American Atlantic waters, being abundant in the Rio de la Plata estuary. The temporal and spatial reproductive pattern of this menhaden was analyzed in relation to the major hydrographic features of the region, and the reproductive biology was studied by using histological analysis of ovaries. B.aurea is a multiple spawner with indeterminate annual fecundity. Daily spawning activity was mostly in the afternoon (15:00 - 16:00),based on the incidence of females with both hydrated oocytes and postovulatory follicles. Spawning frequency, determined using the percentage of females with postovulatory follicles, was about 12. during November. At this frequency, each...

Cordo, H.D..
The structure and abundance of Ling spawning stock were analized from basic biological and oceanographic data recorded during research surveys carried out by INIDEP between 1995 and 2000, to assess the juveniles fraction of common hake stock (January) and of Argentine patagonian squid (February). Jointly both surveys covered the main spawning area of Ling between 44º S and 48º S and approximately between the mouth of San Jorge Gulf (60º W) and 200 m isobath (65º 30’ W) during the summer season (mid-December to mid-March). Size structures and maturity stages confirmed the presence of a spawning unit in the area covered by the surveys. This enabled the estimate of an annual index of Ling spawning stock abundance. Abundance shows a decreasing trend since...
